Dead Wood Falls

Today I stayed in bed and watched dvd's on my lap top. I realised that it was the first time in months that I'd actually taken the day off to 'do nothing'. The last couple of months have been intense. Putting a record out takes a lot of work, particularly when you are like me and want to oversee everything! Anyway I realised that we have achieved a lot:

A beautiful new site that feels like home to visit.
A record we are proud of that looks good to feel and touch (we gave ourselves the luxury of digipaks).
Launches in Melbourne and Sydney with amazing guest supports.
And today our booker Dave came through with the news that our national tour in June looks ready to lock in.

Over the last couple of months I have come to realise that so much is out of your control. All you can do is put love into your work and trust that other people will recieve it. The more I let go of 'how the record was going to be received' and instead just did the 'next right thing' - whether that was lining up a rehearsal, designing posters or talking to our web designer - the better everything seemed to travel!

I guess we all get attached to the things we love. Your first album is like your first kid, releasing it is like sending it off to school for the first day. You hope no-one will bash it up and that it will have friends to sit with at play lunch.

So the title 'Dead Wood Falls' feels apt for how I am feeling today. I felt a surge of relief when I realised that the record was out in the world - that I could let it go at last...

I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUT AND PLAY LIVE SHOWS AGAIN!!! I think live is my favourite part and our band is a lot of fun to be in. I can guarantee that after a long hiatus away from the live scene we are itching to hit the stage and share this album with YOU.

See you at show in your town soon.

Big Love
Jen

Hey Jen... I'm so proud of you and your album as well, as you should be too - it's wonderful to have such strong Australian artists out there.

But what I really wanted to say was thank you for being such a presence of your website... I know it's only been a week since the new site has been up - but it's been great to see that you're on here almost everyday! I love the fact that you are so willing to talk to fans, it's the sign of a true star! Thanks very much.

Oh and by the by, did you happen to see Sarah Blasko at the Closing Ceremony on Sunday night? Wasn't she just amazing!

Thanks Matt. Sarah has an extraordinary voice and presence. I remember seeing her at the Empress in Melbourne about three years ago playing to 40 very enthused fans. It's an intimate room so it feels full with 40 people in there and I remember her remarking how surprised she was to see such a great turn out! And there she is three years on playing to 90,000 at the MCG. The humbling thing is, it doesn't really matter how many people you play to, I guess it's just giving it everything, everytime you do it.

Love the album Jen and am looking forward to seeing you and your band in Melbourne at the Spanish Club. After seeing you play at the Northcote Social Club last year I'd been eagerly anticipating the release of Dead Wood Falls, and it is a beautiful album. Out of curiosity Peaks and Valleys, is the percussion on this track some type of bells?

Hey Erin
Thank you - it's going to be a great night. I love the bill we have put together for The Spanish and I am really looking forward to playing in that room. Nicely spotted with the Peaks and Valley's percussion. It's actually a tambourine. The way James plays it sounds like he was locked in a meat freezer!

Hi Jen,

I just heard some of your tunes and tales while listening to Ben Lee's podcast.

I'm so glad he had you as a guest!

I hope you will make it over to Toronto, Ontario, Canada someday soon. I'd love to catch you live. :-)

Hi my name is Fiona and i came aross you over bens thing, i really liked the song ben did harmony's on, it was very catchy. I was wondering if you were going to be doing a show in Hobart, Hobart is often left in tours, it sucks. but if you are coming will it be an over eighteen event, because if it is that will suck too!

Hi Fi
No plans for Tassie at this stage. Being an indie band makes the trip over a little bit harder on the pocket. But who knows what the future may hold...

I just heard the Ben Lee podcast with you as a guest and it was great! I loved what I heard and will be buying your album. I hope you make it out to Seattle one of these days.

Any advice for someone wanting to write songs but doesn't know where to begin?

Best!

Hi Janelle

Mmmm... I got a tape recorder, a second hand guitar and then spent a couple of years trying to learn how to play and recording my ideas onto tape. I guess these days technology has moved on a bit!
Then all you have to do is write from the heart and tell the truth. That's the hard bit...
All the best with your writing and remember - it's never to late to learn something new - never.

Hi Jen, I have the tape recorder and the guitar. :) I think you're right on. It's probably the vulnerability aspect that I'm having a hard time with. And also feeling like I'm too old to begin. Thank you for your advice and words of encouragement!

Janelle
